Cooper at 6 months
Just a few months ago I photographed Cooper for the first time, and last night I got to spend the evening with him again. Despite the cold the little guy toughed it out without one complaint and managed to be super cute in his little beanie. The location was this years “Trail of Lights”, which is far from what it was last year… a few lights, a big tree of lights, and some food stands seemed like all you saw this year. Bummer…. But some great photographs came from it. Unlike my last post where I lit up a parking garage like a studio this shoot was all available light from the lit up trees, huge work lights the city set up, and a small LED light from the handlebars on my bicycle!

The next three photos is where the LED light came in handy.

Robot Cooper

Cooper has some rad parents and I cant wait to document the rest of his first year!
Laura Lee Bishop
I had the pleasure of photographing the local artist Laura Lee Bishop this past weekend in a downtown parking garage. The inside was lined with white brick wall, concrete floors, and ceiling; I setup shop and lit the place up like a studio.

Got outside just after the sun began to hide….

….and found this amazing hole of light where the sun was bouncing off a gold building behind us. Light like this is to good to pass up, just something you can’t plan for, and you HAVE to take advantage of.

Then back inside with the rest of her band.

High Watt Crucifixers
Here is a quick look into what comes out of a press kit photo shoot between myself and a local Rock n’ Roll band High Watt Crucifixers. I spent a little over a hour with them this past weekend in and around The Highball here in Austin, that is itself a work of art! The Highball is a rad new bowling alley, skee-ball, karaoke, and restaurant/bar all in one location, that is straight out of the 60’s! Anyways, here are my favorite photographs from the evening. Please contact me for any questions/inquiries for setting up a shoot similar to this for your band.

Day 1
Day 2
Die Youngs Last show
Texas Hardcore legends Die Young played their last show this past saturday after 7 years. It was great photographing this band over the past couple of years, and I’m sure there will be other projects in the near future from the guys in the band. They ended it with a 8 band show in the bands home town of Houston, TX at Walters on Washington. I took close to 2000 photos that evening, and edited them down heavily, due to the amount I’m going to show some favorites from the last two bands, and the rest can be viewed on my Photoshelter account here.
The lineup was:
The Separation
Legion
Mammoth Grinder
The Golden Age
Dead City
Folsom
Seven Generations
Diy Young

Seven Generations
Who is also about to play their last show, I was glad to see this band once before they ended it. Their set reminded me why I got into and love Hardcore Punk music. I could feel the raw energy this band put off with such emotion during the whole set, and tried to capture it as best as I could.

Info on the lighting used:
The venue was super dark, a bit to dark fro the D700 even, and to capture enough detail from the show I had to light it. Instead of using the small pop-up flash attached to my camera, or a larger strobe attached to the hotshoe I instead put up two Nikon SB-25’s triggered wirelessly with cybersyncs. First one was stage left and all the way to the back behind the gear, it was gelled with a 1/2 CTO. Second was stage right and just off the stage at the front corner up against a pillar out of the way from the crowd and safe, it was gelled with a full CTO.
Cooper at 3 months
I spent a few hours with a little guy named Cooper the other day, I must say that I’m a bit jealous of his sweet Dr. Seuss room. He also has a sweet Basset Hound dog to grow up with, I’ll be shooting some more of this little guy the next year, but here are a few of my favorites from this shoot.

Tigercity
Shot something a little different from the usual punk rock shows I end up at last night, turns out I came home with some great photographs, and some catchy tunes stuck in my head on my nice ride home at about 12:30 last night. It was a pleasure listening to and shooting something different/new for a change, I hope to be around for some more tunes like this in the future. A local band called Speak started the show, then Royal Bangs from Tennessee, and ending the night with Tigercity from NY.
Enjoy a few of my favorite pictures from the night right below, it was shot for Austinist, and everything from the night is available right here on my photoshelter account.
Gig Life in Austin, TX
This past Thursday night the Gig Life tour rolled through town and played at Emos, I’ve known the guys in Set Your Goals for a few years now so I went out and made some photographs of the bands performances that night. I got there a bit late and missed the first band that went on, Drive A. After that I stood up on stage and poured out sweat, and clicked that shutter button in this Texas heat.
Here are some of my favorites from the night, and go here if you would like to see the rest and purchase a print from the show.
